International Conference on "History and Memory: Global and Local Dimensions"

The Europe Center announces its upcoming international conference on “History and Memory: Global and Local Dimensions”. With European and Van Leer Jerusalem Institute partnership, the conference is part of the Center’s multi-year series on Reconciliation, seeking insight and answers to regional and civil conflict in today’s world of nationality, resource, and territory disputes, as well as multicultural communities and global immigration and mobility. The conference on “History and Memory: Global and Local Dimensions” is the second of the Center’s international conferences in the series; the first was on “Democracy in Adversity and Diversity.” Read more »

Norman Naimark: 'A Question of Genocide'

For nearly 100 years, the Armenian genocide has been a source of deep division and stress between Armenians and Turks. Now, working together for the first time, Turkish, Armenian, and other scholars present in a new book a reconstruction of what happened and why. The book -- A Question of Genocide: Armenians and Turks at the End of the Ottoman Empire -- was co-edited by historian Norman Naimark, along with Ronald Grigor Suny and Fatma Muge Gocek. Naimark, a CISAC affiliated faculty member, is also the author of Stalin's Genocides, published by Princeton University Press in August, 2010.

In spring 2009, the Forum on Contemporary Europe (FCE) and the Division on Languages, Civilizations and Literatures (DLCL) delivered the first part of its multi-year research and public policy program on Contemporary History and the Future of Memory.
